Protect PDF Files

 Subscribers can protect PDF files by the following methods:

• Protect a PDF File with Password and Restrict Document Actions
• Protect a PDF File with Certificate (Android Only)
• Protect PDF Information with Redaction
• AIP Protection

Protect a PDF File with Password

Protect a PDF File with Password and Restrict Document Actions

• On the document pane, tap  on the toolbar on the top;
• Choose Protect > File Encryption;
• To protect a PDF file with password, slide the Open Document toggle to ON. Then input the password.
• To restrict document permissions, slide the Add Document Restrictions toggle to ON. Check the actions that have been enabled. Slide the action toggle to OFF if you want to restrict the action.
• Input the password, and tap Done.

Tip: When opening a PDF file protected with a password, you will be required to input the password first. And the password is needed if you want to remove the restricted document permissions.

Remove Security Settings

To remove the password or restrictions to the PDF file:

• On the document pane, tap  on the toolbar on the top;
• Choose Protect > Remove Security, and confirm your operation;

Tip: The password is needed if you want to remove the restricted document permissions.

Protect a PDF File with Certificate (Android Only)

• On the document pane, tap  on the toolbar on the top;
• Choose Protect > Certificate Protect;
• Select a certificate, and input the password;
• Tap OK.

Tips:

• Certificate Protect is only available in Android 2.3 and above.
• Before encrypting or decrypting a PDF file with a certificate, you need to save the digital certificate on your device.

Protect PDF Information with Redaction

Foxit PDF Editor allows subscribers to permanently redact text, images, and pages to protect confidential information.

Redact Text or Image

• On the document pane, tap  on the toolbar on the top;
• Choose Protect > Redaction;
• Select the Redact Text button  on the toolbar at the bottom, and drag to mark the text, image, or area that you want to redact;
• (Optional) Tap the marked item, and choose Appearance to set the redaction properties. Please refer to “Set Redaction Properties” for more information.
• When you have finished marking the contents that you want to redact, do any of the following to apply redactions:
  • Tap the marked item, and choose Apply to redact the selected item;
  • Tap Apply all on the toolbar at the top to redact all the marked items in the PDF file.

Redact Pages

• On the document pane, tap  on the toolbar on the top;
• Choose Protect > Redaction;
• Select the Redact Page button  on the toolbar at the bottom;
• In the pop-up Redact Pages window, tap the page thumbnails to select the pages that you want to redact, and tap Done;
• (Optional) Tap the marked page, and choose Appearance to set the redaction properties. Please refer to “Set Redaction Properties” for more information.
• When you have finished marking the pages that you want to redact, do any of the following to apply redactions:
  • Tap the marked page, and choose Apply to redact the selected page;
  • Tap Apply all on the toolbar at the top to redact all the marked pages in the PDF file.

Set Redaction Properties

Before applying the redaction, follow the steps below to set redaction properties.

• Tap the marked item or page, and choose Appearance.
• In the pop-up window, you will find the following options:
  • Background Color: Select a fill color for the boxes that will replace the redacted items.
  • Text Color: Select a color for the custom text that is displayed on the redacted area.
  • Text: Specify the text you want to display on the redacted area.
  • Font/Size: Set the font and font size for the text displayed on the redacted area.
• When you have completed the settings, tap anywhere on the document pane to close the redaction properties window.  

Tip: On Android, Foxit PDF Editor only applies the redaction properties to the current redacted item or page by default. On iOS, Foxit PDF Editor will remember your current settings and apply them to the new redactions. To set your current redaction properties as default on Android, please tap Discover on the main interface > Settings, and slide the Remember Last Annotation Panel toggle to on.

Search and Redact Text

For searchable PDF documents, you can redact specific text in a PDF file by search.

• On the document pane, tap  on the toolbar on the top;
• Choose Protect > Redaction;
• Select the Search & Redact button  on the toolbar at the bottom;
• Input the text in the search box on the top, and tap Search;
• By default, Foxit PDF Editor will check all the search results to mark them for redaction. Follow the steps below to double-check the items, if necessary.
  • Tap the search result in the list to check the context in the PDF file. When checking the context, you can tap  or  to jump to the previous or next search result. To return to the redaction search result list, tap .
  • If you want to ignore a certain item from redaction, uncheck it in the redaction search result list.
  • Once confirmed, tap Mark checked results for redaction.
• Do any of the following to apply redactions:
  • Tap the marked item, and choose Apply to redact the selected item;
  • Tap Apply all on the toolbar at the top to redact all the marked items in the PDF file.

Tips:

1. While in the redaction mode, you can swipe left/right (in Single, Facing, or Cover Facing mode) or up/down (in Continuous Scrolling mode) with two fingers to turn pages. To exit the redaction mode, tap Close on the toolbar on the top. 

2. Before applying the redaction, you can tap any marked items and choose Delete to cancel redacting the item. Once applied, the marked content will be permanently redacted and removed. Since the operation cannot be undone, it is recommended that you save a copy of the PDF document before redaction.

AIP Protection

Prerequisites

If you are using the Microsoft Azure Rights Management (Azure RMS) environment, you can log in to the RMS server directly within Foxit PDF Editor.

If you are using the Microsoft Information Protection environment, you need to do the following deployment steps.

Deploy Microsoft Information Protection

To use Microsoft Information Protection in your client system, you need to follow Microsoft's instructions to deploy the Microsoft Information Protection mobile device extension first. For detailed deployment steps, please refer to “Active Directory Rights Management Services Mobile Device Extension”.

When deploying Microsoft Information Protection mobile device extension, you need to run the following Windows PowerShell commands to authorize Foxit PDF Editor for your devices.

For iOS:

Add-AdfsClient -Name "Foxit MobilePDF for iOS" -ClientId "972b6681-fa03-4b6b-817b-c8c10d38bd20" -RedirectUri @("com.foxitsoftware.com.mobilepdf-for-ios://authorize")

For Android:

Add-AdfsClient -Name "Foxit MobilePDF for Android" -ClientId "4ab81192-33f0-4ccb-bdbf-d17da3812dbb" -RedirectUri @("com.foxitsoftware.com.mobilepdf-for-android://authorize")

Tip: For Android users, AIP is only available in Android 6 and above.

AIP Encryption and Decryption

Encrypt a PDF File

• On the document pane, tapon the toolbar on the top;
• Choose Protect > Microsoft Information Protection;
• Input the account and password to sign in;
• Choose the rights policy template;
• (Android only) If necessary, tap Custom Permissions to create a custom permission to protect the file. For instructions on how to create custom permissions, please refer to “Create Custom Permissions”.
• On Android, the PDF file will be encrypted automatically after you select the rights policy template. On iOS, tap Apply to apply the encryption.

Create Custom Permissions (Android Only)

• On the document pane, tap  on the toolbar on the top;
• Choose Protect > Microsoft Information Protection;
• Input the account and password to sign in;
• Tap Custom Permissions;
• In the Add Users tab, you can do the following:
  • Tap Read field, Change filed, or Full Control field to input the email address of a user that you want to authorize with Read permission, Change permissions, or all permissions.
  • Tap  beside the Read or Change field to authorize all users with the permissions.
  • Tap  to remove an added user if needed;
• In the More Options tab, you can do the following:
  • To set the document expiration date: slide the This document expires on toggle to ON, and input the date and time. The document cannot be opened after the specified date.
  • To allow users to print the PDF file, copy content, or comment in the document, slide the Print Content, Copy Content, or Comment in the document toggle to ON as desired.
  • To specify the email address that is used for applying for additional permissions, tap the User can request additional permissions from field, and input the email address.
  • To verify the user’s permission every time the encrypted PDF file is opened, slide the Require a connection to verify a user’s permission toggle to ON.
  • To add a security watermark to the PDF file, slide Security Watermark toggle to ON, tap Add Watermark, and then follow the steps below to create a security watermark.
    • In the pop-up window, input the name of the watermark and tap OK;
    • Tap  to add text, or tap  to add dynamic text;
    • Tap  to set the rotation degree of the watermark;
    • Tap  to set the position of the watermark;
    • Tap  to specify the page range to display the watermark;
    • Tap  to set the scale ratio relative to the target page, and the font, font size, color, and opacity of the text;
    • Tap  and choose Save to save the security watermark and return to the Restricted Access window. In the Restricted Access window, you can also tap  beside the security watermark to edit or delete it as desired.
• Do one of the following as desired:
  • If you need to encrypt the PDF file with the custom permissions directly, tap OK;
  • If you want to save the custom permissions as a template, tap .

Manage Custom Templates (Android Only)

• On the document pane, tap  on the toolbar on the top;
• Choose Protect > Microsoft Information Protection;
• In the RESTRICTED ACCESS group, tap  beside the custom template that you want to manage;
• To edit the custom template, tap Edit, and follow the steps in “Create Custom Permissions”;
• To delete the custom template, tap Delete.

Decrypt a PDF File Protected with Microsoft Information Protection

• On the document pane, tap  on the toolbar on the top;
• Choose Protect > Microsoft Information Protection;
• On Android, choose No Protection. On iOS, choose No Protection, and tap Apply.

Classify and Protect PDFs with Sensibility Labels in AIP

Protect PDFs with Sensibility Labels

• On the document pane, tap  on the toolbar on the top;
• Choose Protect > Microsoft Azure Information Protection;
• Sign in to your AIP account if you haven’t to get the list of configured sensibility labels;
• Select a label from the list, and tap Apply.

Remove Sensibility Labels

• On the document pane, tap  on the toolbar on the top;
• Choose Protect > Microsoft Azure Information Protection;
• Sign in to your AIP account if you haven’t;
• Tap Remove Label.

Switch AIP Accounts

After log in to the AIP server, you can do one of the following to switch the AIP accounts.

• On the document pane, tap  on the toolbar on the top, and choose Protect > Microsoft Azure Information Protection > Change Account. Then input the new account and password to sign in.
• (Android only) Tap Discover > Settings on the main interface, tap the account in the AD RMS Credential group, and input the new account and password to sign in.
